When I arrived at Gedney Farm on Emma and Issei’s wedding day, amidst low clouds and a steady rain, I entertained what was almost certainly a vain hope that they would not be deterred from having their ceremony outdoors. The forecast predicted a clearing just before their ceremony, and I knew that it would make for a beautiful sky and dramatic light; I also knew that most couples would be unwilling to make a call like that while the rain still pattered overhead.
But one should never underestimate the stubbornness of a couple whose relationship has spanned nearly a decade and multiple continents. These two have built and sustained their relationship over time and distance that would discourage less determined souls. So what was a little rain on their wedding day?
They made the call. And as predicted, the rain cleared; it was the sun that accompanied them as they made their way across the fields to the ceremony. Surrounded by their closest friends and family, they exchanged their vows amid smiles, laughter, and joyful tears.
That laughter and joy carried through the night, with some of the funniest and most heartfelt wedding speeches I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing. Not to mention the dance party! What a privilege it was to document all of the wonderful moments of this day, and the treasured relationships they represent.
